Family Literacy Project

KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa

Along a winding road, passing rural settlements and rolling hills, lies the town of Underberg, the headquarters of the Family Literacy Project in the foothills of the Drakensberg mountains.  The educators here work directly in the public schools and have to contend with under-resourced facilities.  The Family Literacy Project brings in lap desks, white boards, flashcards and reading material to deliver their reading lessons.

One of the skilled educators, Nkosikhona Msiya teaches the short vowel syllable type to his students at the Enhanhleni School, Kwa-Zulu Natal, South Africa.

The Family Literacy Project also visits caregivers in their homes, to provide materials, activities, and support for early literacy development.
